Established as a premier producer of Chardonnay for the 2006 vintage Meyer Family Vineyards arrived on the B.C. wine scene with huge expectations of themselves. The Meyer Family Vineyard wines are from a small 1.62 hectare estate vineyard on the Naramata Bench planted to just Chardonnay.
Owner Jak Meyer spent 3 years looking for the right vineyard location and in 2006 purchased the Naramata property. There are only two wines produced from the Naramata vineyard, both made from Chardonnay: The Tribute Series which is dedicated to a Western Canadian of significance and the Micro Cuvee, which is just that, a wine of the very finest barrels and extremely small production. The dedication to producing the Okanagan's best quality chardonnay is realized with the impeccably manicured vineyard and rigorous selection of perfect fruit. The wines are typically handcrafted to respect where they are from with the right balance of oak to frame the wine and respect the sense of place. The grapes are whole cluster pressed in order to preserve fresh fruit flavours and restrict any harsh components, the Chardonnay juice is cool fermented and aged in only the finest French oak barriques of which are 40% are new with the Tribute Series and variably higher with the Micro Cuvee depending on vintage.
In 2008, Jak purchased a second vineyard of just 6.9 hectares, located in the Okanagan Falls area. This vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer. Furthermore in 2008, in addition to the new vineyard in the Okanagan Falls area, Jak acquired another key asset to ensure outstanding quality: Winemaker and Viticulturalist Chris Carson. Chris's resume reads like that of a talent whose quest for knowledge of producing world class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and dedication of those varieties is showcased by having worked in Burgundy, New Zealand and California. His tour of duty over the past decade has now brought him back home to Canada to guide the artisan direction for the wines of Meyer Family Vineyards.
The Meyer wines received instant respect in the trade for there high quality and balance, and therefore can be found in most of the fine dining restaurants in the lower mainland, Whistler and Victoria. The acknowledgement of quality has been provided by some of Canada's most respected wine writers and internationally by Stephen Spurrier of Decanter Magazine.
Meyer was awarded #3 in the top ten small wineries in BC by the 2016 WineAlign National Wine Awards of Canada.
