More Info

The heart of this wine comes from our Su'skol vineyard in the Carneros growing region in southern Napa Valley. The vineyard is named for the native Su'skol people who used the site as a meeting place and valued the nearby sources of fish and game. With its close proximity to San Pablo and San Francisco Bays, the marine influence of cooling morning fog and afternoon breezes create an ideal climate for growing Chardonnay. The 175-acre vineyard is planted exclusively to Chardonnay with nine unique clones, giving our winemaker a veritable spice rack to choose from to add layers of complexity to the wine.

"Luscious creme brulee and crisp apple aromas lead to broad, rich golden apple, lemongrass and butterscotch flavors that give it richness with some vibrancy. All barrel-fermented and malolactic fermented, it’s elegant and not overly buttery. Drink now."

"Loads of vanilla, butter and macadamia nut flavors give this full-bodied wine a mouth-filling, almost-sweet effect. Layers of baked apple and pear tart glide on rather soft acidity."

"A rich opening of spicy oak and cinnamon red hots leads the way to a midpalate of rich and rounded varietal style in this well-made, value-minded wine. Delivering texture and flavor, it finishes in a viscous layering of honey and crème brûlée. "

"The Chardonnay grapes for Hess Collection 2019 Chardonnay were estate grown and sourced from the Su'skol Vineyard, one of the coolest areas in the Napa wine region. Morning fogs and cooling breezes allow grapes to ripen slowly and completely. Winemaker Dave Guffy selects from nine different clones to craft this California Chard fragrant and bright with ripe apple, pear, citrus zest and vanilla flavours vibrant and silky on the palate. Chill and enjoy with a grilled pork tenderloin."

"This well-made white offers a balanced melange of apple, pear and cinnamon. Bright acidity lifts it all and works well with the French oak."

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Oct/2019

2017 -

"The 2017 Chardonnay Estate was fermented in a combination of stainless steel and barrels, and 20-25% of the fruit went through malolactic. Aged in 20% new oak, it leaps from the glass with bold tropical fruit notes of green mango, guava and fresh pineapple with touches of honeysuckle, spiced pears and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with ripe pear and exotic fruit salad with great freshness and a long spicy finish."

"The producer pulls from its estate Su’skol Vineyard for this wine, which opens in an aromatic flirtation of sweet honeysuckle, revealing the site’s abundance of musqué clone. Crisp on the entry and midpalate, it shows a full-bodied style as it opens—notes of pear and fig are wrapped between spicy nutmeg and a viscous bite of oak on the finish."

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Dec/2016

2014 -

"Readers looking for one of the big-time sleepers of the vintage, and a great value, need look no further than the 2014 Chardonnay Estate Napa. This is 100% Chardonnay from Napa and it sells for a 'song' and more good news is there are just over 24,000 cases of this wine that went through about 25% malolactic and was aged in stainless steel and neutral wood. Exotic floral notes of mango and guava jump from the glass, along with pineapple and honeysuckle. It is medium-bodied, crisp and fresh with loads of fruit. This is a big-time winner! Drink it over the next year."
