More Info

Sauzal Vineyard is located 20 km northeast of the town of Cauquenes, in a warm area of the Maule Valley. Its vines were planted in the 1950s, when Carignan vines first arrived in Chile, on very gentle, granitic, south-facing slopes. Pruned in the old Gobelet method, dry-farmed and managed since being planted by Don Audalio, a 75-year-old farmer who continues to manage his vines using traditional, cultural and natural techniques.
Vigno: Vino with the Latin G from Carignan.

"Fine roasted spices accent the deep nose full of fresh blueberries, blackberries and white pepper. Naturally succulent and concentrated with a fresh array of blue and black fruit on the full-bodied palate. Structured fresh tannins here, but also polished. Carignan. Drink or hold."

"Rich, racy sweet blueberries with some asphalt, violets and wild herbs. A hint of sweet spice. Full-bodied but super fresh on the palate with firm, fresh tannins. Fine-grained and really eclectic for VIGNO. Slightly more crowd-pleasing. Excellent depth here. An outstanding expression of old-vine carignan. 6% cinsault here. From Cauquenes. Drink or hold."

"The 2021 Vigno was produced with grapes from a vineyard in Sauzal towards Cauquenes, a field blend with about 10% Cinsault that is included in the fermentation vat. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and matured in 5,000-liter oak foudre for 16 months. It was cropped from a cooler and more balanced vintage. It has 14.4% with a pH of 3.28; it's fresh and balanced, with energy. 6,600 bottles were filled in November 2022."

"The 2021 Carignan Vigno also contains a 10% dash of Cinsault from Sauzal, Maule, and spent 16 months in foudres. Purple in hue. The black fruity nose features notes of raspberry and blackberry over a delicate oaky layer. Broad and juicy in the mouth, the faintly angular tannins as well as the taut and juicy acidity convey into a liqueur-like volumed palate."

#38 of Top 100 Wines of Chile 2022. "While you may think this is deep and brooding, there is a floral lift with dark cherries, crushed blueberries and hot stones. Complete and effortlessly concentrated, with a juicy core of black and red fruit. A mouthful of powdery, creamy tannins rounds it off. Lots of fruit and mineral vibrancy in the finish. Drink or hold."

"The 2020 Vigno from Undurraga was cropped from a warm and very dry year and was produced with grapes from Cauquenes, a cooler part of Maule. It's a blend of 92% Cariñena and 8% Cinsault with 14.3% alcohol and a low pH, denoting freshness. It's balanced, powerful, rustic, dense and intense, a little earthy and has a long, dry finish. 6,600 bottles were filled in November 2021 from one 5,000-liter oak foudre, where the wine matured for 16 months."

The ripe, fruity nose features notes of raspberry, blackberry and hints of jam, all framed in oaky aromas. Broad in the mouth with firm tannins, it’s fairly indulgent in feel, and the ripe fruit flavors return at the end."

"There is great elegance and character in the 2019 Vigno—earthy and rustic but also floral and nuanced. The Cariñena is complemented by some 10% Cinsault, and the wine comes through as ripe but fresh and vibrant, powerful an harmonious. There is a dry, stony and granite-driven feeling on the palate that I like very much. It has to be one of the finest Vignos from Undurraga. 6,600 bottles were filled in November 2020 after spending 16 months in 5,000-liter oak foudre."

"This carignan includes 12 percent cinsault, capturing the cool southern sun in its black-cherry flavors. It’s a brisk and earthy red, fragrant and spicy with well-modulated intensity. Pure Chileno pleasure with a steak, or with a steaky grilled portobello mushroom."

"One of the best value VIGNO releases - something that goes for Undurraga's wines in general - this is a blend of Carignan with 5% Cinsault, sourced from a vineyard to the north-east of Cauquenes in one of the region's warmer spots. Firm, chewy and a little meaty, it's a wine that takes no prisoners, compact, dark berry fruit and the concentration to age slowly in bottle."

#43 TOP 100 WINES OF CHILE 2019 "This is a very impressive vigno (carignan from Maule in Chile) that manages to deliver a lot of concentration on the nose, while remaining vibrant and dialed-in. Blackberries, freshly cut herbs, cedar, tobacco, hot stones, dark plums, ink and granite all spring from the glass. Full-bodied with very deep fruit on the palate, but it’s all wrapped in a velvety package of firm tannins. Long on the finish. Drink in 2023."

“Undurraga’s 2015 Vigno is a blend of 90% Carignan and 10% Cinsault, sourced from head-pruned, dry-farmed vines in Maule, 20 kilometers north of Cauquenes, in a warm zone of the valley. The two varieties fermented separately with indigenous yeasts, and the wine aged in a 5,000-liter oak foudre for 16 months. This has nice roundness and a lifted sensation (is it the Cinsault?), from vines that seem to thrive in warm places. It is perhaps a little gentler than the pure T.H. Carignan from this same year, and this time I found that this bottling could be disguised as something from Priorat from a cool year. 6,600 bottles were filled in November 2016.”

“I also tasted this 2014 Vigno next to the 2015 version and the T.H. Carignan from 2015. This is a slightly different blend than the 2015—88% Cariñena and 12% Cinsault. But the vinification and aging was similar, and the origin of the grapes is the same, from vines planted in 1950 in Maule. It fermented separately in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in a 5,000-liter oak vat for 16 months. 2014 was warmer and riper than 2013, a ripe, concentrated but elegant style of year. There are not that many differences between 2014 and 2015 in Maule; both vintages were warm, but 2014 was drier and resulted in lower yields. So, the wines are a little more concentrated and more powerful, as well as a little warmer and riper, as it should be according to the vintage. 4,096 bottles were filled in December 2015.”

"2013 is one of the coolest recent vintages in Maule, and the 2013 Vigno from Undurraga shows it. The grapes come from Sauzal in Maule, and it’s not only Carignan (Cariñena) but also contains some 12% Cinsault. This time the two varieties were fermented separately with native yeasts. The wine matured in French oak barrels (15% of them new) for 16 months. This is a serious, austere and a little backward Mediterranean blend with subtleness, power and elegance. It feels very young and undeveloped and shows more nuances with some more time in bottle. This is superb, different in style compared to the TH Carignan, more elegant and subtle here, but at a very similar quality level. 4,345 bottles were filled in December 2014.”

"Carignan makes up 88 percent of this blend, its aromas of flowers and tart red-fruit flavors shining through. The electricity that seems to emanate from inside the wine makes it refreshing, lively, radiant. Cinsault brings some softness to the texture, but also more fruity notes, making this deliciously juicy, a match for meaty baked ziti."

"Mainly Carignan with Cinsault, all dry farmed and sustainably grown, yields vibrant, complex red and dark berries, earthy and smoky notes before a raspberry and black cherry palate. Opens in the glass to superb black pepper and spice notes in the persistent, lingering finish. You can go for the classic braised beef cheeks (maybe not so classic) or a simple fresh tomato sauce with slightly bruised basil."

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Dec/2015

"The 2012 Vigno Carignan from Undurraga contains 12% Cinsault co-fermented with the Carignan from Sauzal. It matured in French barriques for 16 months and the oak is more marked than in the 2012 TH Carignan, a very interesting comparison. If this and the TH line would have a little less imprint from the elevage, I think they'd be more transparent and ultimately better. The main difference here is the texture of the tannins, which I see coarser with influence from the oak. Don't get me wrong, this is still red and floral, a fantastic Vigno, with the character of the place and grape; but the side by side comparison makes it look a little below the TH today."

"I tasted the 2011 Vigno Carignan from Undurraga at a separate tasting from the T.H Carignan, and this Vigno comes from the coastal Sauzal-Cauquenes zone of Maule. This is a field blend of 88% Carignan and the rest Cinsault planted in 1958, aged for 18 months in used barrels. The wine has a ripe nose of black plums, licorice, tree bark and Mediterranean herbs with a medium-bodied palate with sharp, delineated acidity, very integrated oak and very good freshness and length. The balsamic aromas grow with time in the glass. This is a great Mediterranean red at a great price. Superb! Drink now-2020."

"(88% carignan and 12% cinsault, all from old dry-farmed vines): Opaque ruby. Intense blackberry and cherry-cola scents pick up spice and floral nuances with air. Fleshy and broad in the mouth, offering juicy dark fruit flavors that show impressive depth and focus. At once rich and lithe, finishing with noteworthy power and smooth, fully absorbed tannins. This wine's depth suggests that it will age gracefully but it's also delicious now."

"Dense and thick anise, potent leather, black licorice, and ample kirsch, blackberry, dried black plum in this dry-farmed, old vine carignan from Maule. There's a fragrant dusky potpourri spicing this potent, ripe, dense, thick and seductive palate, with thankful quench of acidity and concentrated salty wash on the hot finish. Requires equally dense red meats to match the intensity. Decant for maximum enjoyment, and then pair with lamb."

"The 'Vigno' label was created by a group of likeminded producers bent on reviving and championing old vine Carignan in the region of Maule. Undurraga’s example is intense with black cherry and currants, licorice, fragrant dried herbs and just tons of pure delicious fruit. DJ pronounces this is ‘the future of Chile'."
