The modern era of Chateau Rocheyron started in 2010 when Peter Sisseck, the Danish winemaker responsible for Spain’s highly acclaimed Dominio de Pingus, and longtime friend Silvio Denz, owner of Bordeaux Chateau Faugeres, purchased the right bank property, breathing new life and a refreshed spirit into the dormant estate.
Lying on the edge of the famous limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion, Peter Sisseck and Silvio Denz found in the lieu-dit of Rocheyron, 8.45 hectares of prime quality terroir. The vineyards, situated in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, flaunt the pedigree of Saint-Emilion's finest Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and are home to some of the commune’s oldest vines at 80 years of age.
Chateau Rocheyron’s vineyards are planted to the typical density of the appellation at 6,000 vines per hectare, and are comprised of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc grapes. The estate is entirely organically farmed, crops at low yields, and aims to harvest only phenolically ripe fruit. The winemaking is done in a newly renovated facility since the purchase of the estate, with three stainless steel tanks and seven new cement vats of varying sizes, allowing for more parcel by parcel vinification. The vinification of Château Rocheyron wines bears the hallmark of star oenologist Peter Sissek, who succeeds in extracting mineral notes and cooler fruit aromas out of ripe grapes. The resulting wines are distinctive and perfectly balanced, being neither woody nor overripe in taste.
