The Misty Coves of Marlborough is an affectionate name given to the world famous Marlborough Sounds by Andrew. The Marlborough Sounds holds a special place in his heart, having spent many summers swimming, sailing and enjoying quality time with friends and family. The nickname “Misty Coves” was given to those rare occasions when he and his family experienced days of wet and misty weather during their holidays. Although the name was created with a bit of tongue and cheek, there is an explanation behind the phenomenon of mist that sits in and around the many coastal inlets within the sounds. The Marlborough sounds are an extensive network of sea-drowned valleys created by a combination of land subsidence and rising sea levels. The daytime heating after cool evenings during the summer months evaporates water from the cool ocean waters creating the phenomenon of mist and the name, Misty Coves of Marlborough!
